Focused Ultrasound Beam
A focused ultrasound beam is the precisely converging wave of acoustic energy at the core of how HIFU works — multiple ultrasound waves are shaped and directed so they meet at one specific point beneath the skin. This convergence is what makes "focused" the operative word in HIFU: unshaped ultrasound would spread its energy diffusely across a wide area at a shallow depth, but a properly focused beam concentrates that same energy into a tiny focal zone at a chosen depth, similar in principle to how a lens focuses light. The result is a high local energy density exactly at the target — enough to generate a meaningful thermal effect — while energy density everywhere else along the beam's path, including at the skin's surface, remains far lower and generally imperceptible. This is the fundamental physics that allows HIFU to treat structures beneath the skin without treating the skin itself.
