Protecting Your Skin from the Sun

Direct sunlight can have damaging effects on the skin, leading not only to an increase in premature ageing, but also cancer and other skin diseases.

There are, however, really simple ways to protect yourself against the harmful UVA and UVB rays without having to completely avoid being outdoors.

Protect your skin with these top tips:

#1 - SPF

Use a broad-spectrum sunblock with high Sun Protection Factor (SPF) if you’re going to be outdoors for any length of time. Remember, even if it’s cloudy the sun’s rays can still penetrate and will reflect off surfaces such as water and sand even when it’s not particularly hot. Remember as well that sunblock wears off after a couple of hours, and if you’ve been swimming, you’ll need to re-apply as soon as you’ve finished. Be sure to check that your sunblock is in-date, and only use lip-balms that include an SPF of at least 15.

#2 - Avoid the sun during the hottest parts of the day

Normally between 11 am and 3 pm the sun is at its most potent, so if you can, avoid being outdoors in direct sunlight during these times. If you do have to be out and about, make sure you’ve got a hat, are wearing sunblock and have enough water to stay hydrated. If you’re seated or at the beach, make sure you’ve got an umbrella or find a shady spot.

#3 - Keep your skin covered wherever possible

It may sound logical to ‘keep covered up’ when the sun is at its hottest, but if you’re out and about you don’t necessarily want to be wearing long trousers or a long-sleeved shirt. You can solve the problem by using lighter fabrics and sarongs or scarves to cover arms and legs as these are light and airy, but will afford you some protection from the sun.

Remember though that most clothing doesn’t offer more than about a SPF 15, so you’ll need to use a sunblock too, and remember to wear a wide-brim hat and sunglasses as these will protect your face, and particularly the delicate skin around your eyes.
